The heat rate is controlled by electrical signals originating from the sinus node, the hearts natural pacemaker. Conditions of the conduction system affect the electrical system and upset the natural rhythm.

The Heartbeat

A brief description of the heart muscle and how it functions.

Terms & Definitions

Medical terms and basic definitions.

Sudden Arrhythmic Death

An arrhythmia that stops the heat beating or causes it to beat so slowly or so fast that it cannot pump enough blood to support life will result in cardiac arrest. Ventricular fibrillation is the most dangerous arrhythmia being fast, irregular and often occurring without warning resulting in arrhythmic death.

Fainting

Fainting is often one of the key warning signs of a possible heart condition that can cause arrhythmia.
